Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between speech/voice therapy and coaching?

If you have a diagnosable condition (e.g. stuttering, speech sound disorder, dysphonia, etc.), then therapy is the right track for you.  If you are looking to improve your speech, voice, or communication skills, but you don’t have an underlying “disorder” that is negatively impacting your success, then coaching would be the appropriate path.  If you aren’t sure which is the case for you, schedule a free consultation to discuss your specific needs and we’ll figure it out together.

Are you licensed / certified as a speech-language pathologist?

Our therapists are all licensed in the state of Illinois and certified by the American Speech-Language Association.

Do I need a doctor referral to see you?

No, you can start therapy with or without a doctor’s referral. However, if you are hoping to be reimbursed by your health insurance, you may need a referral to be approved for coverage (contact your insurance company for more information).

Do you take insurance?

Clarion Voice & Speech is in-network for Blue Cross Blue Shield Illinois (BCBSIL). However, if you have a different insurance provider, you may be eligible for reimbursement of some/all of the therapy costs. You can contact your insurance provider for more information. We can also help you ask the right questions to verify this information - just send us an email at info@clarionvs.com.

Can I get services if I don’t live in Chicago or Illinois?

Absolutely! We can provide tele-therapy and online coaching services no matter where you live.

How often will we meet?

Most people schedule services once a week (recommended), but we know that isn’t always possible or preferred. We offer flexibility in scheduling, from twice a week to once a month to everything in between.

Will I need to practice at home to see results?

Home practice is crucial to success! We like to say “practice makes progress”, and clients who commit to practice outside of the therapy room are the ones who see the fastest and most significant improvements.

Is it possible to change my voice to match my gender identity WITHOUT medical or surgical intervention?

Yes! There are many behavioral adjustments that you can make to create significant changes in your voice, all without medication or surgery. Our therapists have helped many clients find their best voice using exercises and a lot of practice.
